The Community Perspective

Let’s take a look at Whitehill amateur swimming club, historically based in Whitehill pool, Dennistoun but have recently been relocated to Springburn swimming pool over concerns that the structure of the building is  not safe and is unfit for use. Ultimately meaning that the club no longer has its original hub, a venue they have used for many years.

Many people in the east of Glasgow, especially in Dennistoun, feel very strongly about keeping this facility open as they believe it provides a great place for people to come and exercise, particularly for young people as Whitehill Swimming club in particular, provides lessons from fully qualified and experienced teachers to children aged 5 and over for a fraction of the fees that could be charged by a potential competitor swimming lesson provider. These marginal costs are helping to keep swimming a sport for all, the way it should be, and encourage people from all backgrounds to provide their children with the right education in regards to water safety and the fundamentals of swimming, which we know has many benefits.

This club in particular, also provides the club swimmers, usually in their early teens, with the opportunity to gain experience as a swimming teacher by working as a student teacher alongside a qualified instructor to receive some insight into managing a group of younger swimmers and actively demonstrating tasks in front of them. Gaining this experience has a number of benefits, most importantly for a young persons confidence and social skills. Another strong perk is that with this experience, the club will provide the student with the opportunity to complete their full swimming teachers qualification, which they will be able to take these skills into the job market for a chance at a part time, or full time role depending on other commitments. So not only is it socially important that these facilities remain open, it also provides significant economic benefits by encouraging young people into the workforce.
